Kanheri Caves - History details
The Kanheri Caves are a complex of ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves located within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai, Maharashtra. As historically part of the island of Salsette, the caves are now situated in the modern suburb of Borivali. The name Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit word Krishnagiri, meaning "black mountain," after the black basalt rock they were carved from.
