Mahatma Gandhi Statue, Promenade, Puducherry - History details
Iconic 13‑ft granite statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Goubert Avenue, inaugurated 26 January 1965 and sculpted by Roy Choudhury. Encircled by eight monolithic pillars brought from Gingee Fort, it anchors cultural events at Gandhi Thidal and overlooks remains of the old pier. Local lore recalls a tunnel below the pedestal, now permanently sealed.
