Founded 1736 as a Carmelite mission dedicated to St. Teresa of Ávila, Mahe’s shrine grew under European missionaries and local Catholics; it suffered damage in Anglo‑French clashes and was renovated c.1788 by Abbé Duchenin; the clock tower was fitted in 1855. Elevated as a Minor Basilica, it hosts a vibrant October feast attracting pilgrims across Malabar.
