Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary - History details
Established in 1973, this 344 sq km sanctuary in Wayanad forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Its four ranges—Muthanga, Tholpetty, Kurichiat and Sulthan Bathery—harbour elephant herds, tigers, gaur and rare birds. Moist deciduous and semi‑evergreen forests support rich biodiversity. Safaris operate in the morning and afternoon, offering glimpses of wildlife amid hilly terrain and riverine patches.
